Coming into Johnston Yard |
Description: |
A southbound freight goes over the Nonconnah Creek Bridge on the southbound Hollywood District main. The two tracks that go to the left are City Wye 1 and City Wye 2 and the track that goes to the right is the Grenada Wye. The little building is the "GO" office. Today, this building is gone, along with the iron man, and the block signal. All of these tracks are still here though. The track that the train is on is now called Shelby Main 1, the track to the left is Shelby Main 2, and a new track has been added to the right of Shelby Main 2 and it is called the Nonconnah. |

GM&O GP30 508 |
Description: |
GM&O GP30 508 at Paducah, Kentucky on June 25, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in Feburary 1963 (c/n 27912) on EMD Order 7635, it rides on trucks from Alco FA1 and FB1 trade-in's. I recall reading somewhere that it took the EMD engineers some tinkering to get the GE traction motors to work with EMD electronics. It is seen here in the dead line at the shops in Paducah, the Illinois Central's main back shops which, at the time of this photo, were shut down. This locomotive became ICG GP30 2258 and was eventually rebuilt to CSX slug 2256. Stencilled under the cab window are the words: ISELIN SHOP, and on the access door below the central air intake grill are the words: TEST FILTER ELEMENT DO NOT CHANGE. |

Built in August 1964 as GM&O GP35 619 (c/n 29276) on EMD Order 7729, it briefly became PAL 2517, was rebuilt by VMV Enterprises in December 1990 to BN GP39V 2978, later becoming BNSF 2978. It is seen here outside the ICG's Paducah Shops which, during my visit, were shut down. Eventually, the Shops were taken over by VMV Enterprises. |

GM&O (ICG) GP30 510 |
Description: |
Eight months after the Gulf Mobile & Ohio merged with the Illinois Central, former GM&O GP30 510 was parked by the sand tower at the little service area across from the former GM&O depot in Bogalusa. In the left background was a remnant of the shop buildings built here by the New Orleans-Great Norther Railroad. The ICG would eventually build a new engine house and service area at its yard on the south side of town, and the old shop area would become a shopping center named SHOP YARD SQUARE!. The 510 was never repainted as ICG 2260 and it was sold to the Paducah & Louisville in 1986. VMV rebuilt it into CSX slug 2264 in 1989.(approximate month and day) |

GM&O GP30 510 |
Description: |
GM&O GP30 510 southbound at Covington, Tennessee on July 19, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1963 (c/n 27914) on EMD Order 7635, it became ICG 2260 and was later rebuilt into CSX slug 2264. The following is excerpted from the June/July 1982 issue of Mainline Modeler Magazine, article beginning on page 27 by Bruce Meyer: The trucks on the ICG's ex-GM&O GP-30's and GP-35's were from Alco FA/FB trade-in's. The Alco four-wheel swing bolster trucks with the special Alco lever pin and retainer at the pull rods were rebuilt at EMD, which also rebuilt the GE Model 752 traction motors to their specifications. The original GE 74:18 gear ratio was retained due to the large center distance between the 752 armature shaft and axle. This gear ratio provided a maximum speed of 71 mph. All units were equipped with dynamic brakes. The GM&O obtained a total of 31 GP30's (#'s 500-530) in 1962-63, and 48 GP-35's (#'s 601-648) in 1964-65. South of Venice, Illinois, the GM&O was what might be called a "drag railroad", with trains run at or near full tonnage. Between Venice and the Ohio River, the tonnage rating in both directions was set by a hill called Alto Pass. Although Alto Pass was not very high or long, it was steep, and included a number of curves. The railroad expected to hang everything but the kitchen sink behind the new GP-30's and GP-35's and crawl up Alto Pass. During the years 1963, 1964, and 1965, the railroad and EMD conducted many wheel slip tests in drag freight service on the hill. The somewhat different electrical characteristics of the 752 traction motor and the ride response of the AAR Type B trucks required a number of modifications to the wheel slip systems in order to obtain maximum tonnage over Alto Pass. Trotting along side of the lead GP-30 of a four unit consist climbing Alto Pass, moving under five miles per hour in 8th throttle, in order to watch the slipping lead axle is not recommended practice, but it was done in the interest of "science". Alto Pass has been abandon now in favor of the more gentle grades on the old passenger main line of the Illinois Central just a few miles to the east. |

GM&O 516 |
Description: |
Empty coal train led by five GM&O units on the EJ&E. I believe these trains went to a power plant in northern Indiana, but not sure. Does anyone know how they were routed? I don't remember there being a convenient connection between the GM&O and EJ&E at Joliet. GM&O 516 was later ICG 2266, scrapped 6/87. Date of photo approximate. |

Southern Railfans |
Description: |
A couple of months before the Illinois Central–Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger a couple of railfbns from the south end of the GM&O (Jim Selzer from Slidell and Earl Hampton from New Orleans) headed north to document the railroad before it disappeared. Here, Jim Selzer was observing the engines at the railroad’s shop in Venice, Illinois. Of particular interest was the 950, which had been built as EMD SD40 prototype 434, on an SD35 frame. It was unique on the GM&O and had been purchased in July 1966 to replace wrecked GP35 614. The GM&O and the ICG may be gone, but the 950 lives at the Monticello Railway Museum as IC 6071.
