Description: |
The WSOR job on the Markesan branch passes the Stellmacher elevator in Fairwater as it heads back to Horicon at night fall. A lot of tonnage comes off this former Milwaukee Road branch from sand quarries. There are a handfrl of customers on the line. Though it still has a spur, I have not seen anything spotted at this elevator. I don't get over there to see very often. |

The 1913 Sanborn map depicts five tracks at this grade crossing, only this one remains. The MILW depot was just out of frame to left. Ripon Area Builders, in the background, is the former site of the 40,000 bu. CM&StP elevator. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. |

WSOR local passes a grain elevator and approaches E. Franklin St. as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Waupun, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. I believe the elevator is Farmers' Elevator, but I forgot to make note of the sign while I was there. It used to be operated by the Milwaukee Elevator Co. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. The depot stood here, between these two sets of tracks at E. Franklin St. Built ca. 1856 when Milwaukee & Horicon Railroad came to town. The depot was moved ca. 1981. Technically it still exists, but it is in deplorable condition: https://www.flickr.com/photos/11741544@N05/8239520147/. The station sign is at the far right of the photograph. |

WSOR local crosses the former junction with C&NW as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Burnett, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. The C&NW right-of-way is now the Wild Goose State Trail. The trail deviates from the right-of-way for a short distance from here because part of the C&NW rails are still in place to service Peachey Bros. Elevator, partially visible background left. Another part of their facility could be serviced by the MILW, out of frame to left, and that spur is also still in place. I am pretty sure the union depot stood right here, the grassy area foreground center. The station sign is at far right. |

Now facing forward, the 3806 leads the 2054 and about 30 cars around the bend and onto the Prairie Sub. A set out at the Kohl Center siding and the UW Heater plant are less than a mile ahead. |

Having safely set out a cut of loads on the Kohl center siding, the crew takes about a dozen more loads to be spotted in the UW-Heater plant (out of picture at right). Interestingly enough, this is the fourth grade crossing that the train has passed since leaving the yard 2-3 miles ago that passes diagonally through the middle of an intersection. Gotta love the city planning here... |

The engineer carefully throttles and hits the breaks as several switch moves are made over the Park street overpass. This must be a tricky place to set out cars- the overpass is at the top of a small, relatively steep (for a railroad) hill. |

The train sits empty in Shorewood Hills while the crew stops at Copp's (at right) for some foods. Word on the street has it that the chicken is pretty good... |

The train heads to Middleton as the light of day disappears behind approaching storm clouds. Check out the gates at this crossing- They completely block traffic and will stop a car moving 35mph dead in its tracks. This is certainly an interesting way to keep cars from running the gates! |
