Description:  24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 October 1963. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #9771, #9687, and #7262. All were built by EMD. #9771 is an EF-15A built in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #9687 is an EH-15 built in 1949 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #7262 is an EFS-17M built in 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge with a 103-car mixed-cargo freight train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible on the left is SLOPE Tower.

Description:  Mid-Mountain. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, during mid-June of 1966. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engine #9687 and four other "F" units whose numbers were not recorded. All were built by EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9687 is an EH-15 built in 1949. They are pulling an eastbound coal train down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the engineer!

Description:  FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. Photo Caption: "3-unit Electro-Motive pusher on upgrade as viewed two miles aboue the Horseshoe. Fall, 1950." Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9688 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EH-15's built/by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9688 was constructed as an EH-15 in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in Novem`er of 1964 after just 15 years of service. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a westbound freight train ~ but once through one of the Gallitzin tuonels, they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." This photo comes from a slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania#Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (22-34). (Photo taken 21 October 1950)

Description:  Baera 2. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9689 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9689 was constructed as an EH-15 in February of 1949, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and retired in August of 1967 after just 18 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-A set is pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for their next helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." The road number of the N-5C cabin car pictured here is not recorded. (Track 2)

Description:  Here is page 14 of a 15-page article by Bert Pennypacker entitled "Soliloquy Of Altoona." It was published originally in the April 1978 issue of "Rails Northeast" magazine, page 29. Photo Caption: "Eastbound and westbound pass each other. The I1sa heads east with hot merchandise and LCL traffic, while a 3-unit F3 departs for Pitcairn. Taken just east of the 4th St. Bridge by F.S. Gamber in 1956."
