PRR Erecting & Machine Shop, #7 of 10, c. 1953 |
Description: |
Here is the seventh of ten original photos by Douglas C. Jones that were taken in the Juniata section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1953. Shown here is a portion of the storage yard at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop. Partially visible at the top left is PRR engine #4230, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during June of 1923, rebuilt in this very Shop as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service. In the center is Maintenance-of-Way flatcar #495955; stored on its deck is a new cast-steel trailing truck which, at this point in history, may never be installed. In the foreground are numerous high-grade steel steam locomotive driving wheels which have run their last miles and are soon headed to the Recycling Center. |

Description: |
Kern. Here is the first of four successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred R. Kern that were taken near Vail, Pennsylvania, on 4 May 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4230, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during June of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959 after 36 years of service. Close observation suggests that there is a rear-end pusher locomotive adding to the drama! |
