Viewing Album:  Pantex White Train or Bombs Across America

Album Info:For over 30 years, nuclear warheads were assembled at Amarillos BWXT Pantex plant and shipped by rail across the nation. The Pantex facility owned several specialized railcars that it used to transport and guard the warheads. It interchanged with the Santa Fe a few miles east of Amarillo. The cars were painted white in an attempt to protect the warheads from the summer heat. The solid white nuclear bomb train was nicknamed the White Train. Peace activists also called it the Death Train. The cars later were painted red or blue in hopes of not being so obvious to protestors and attackers. By the late 1980s, the White Train was replaced with armored tractor-trailer rigs and the equipment was stored. In 2006, Pantex donated the equipment to the Amarillo Railroad Museum and with the help of the BNSF Railroad, the cars and a Pantex switcher are now on public display. The display consists of the heavily armored car that actually carried the weapons and power-buffer cars that contained generators and provided a buffer between the weapon car and the escort cars. The escort cars are interesting because of the gun ports.
